Soul of a Ginger
Can a place have its own soul? If so, does it come from the people being and living there or the ever-lasting material objects? I think a place can definitely have its own soul and more than through the mere objects, it’s through the respective memories of all its inhabitants over time, memories that will latch themselves to the objects, giving a place a soul, through the collection of individual, interconnected memories. I tried with my camera to catch that reflection of a timeless concept, through the objects attached to too many memories.
I disappear occasionally in the Slovak mountains and people and friends ask me, where do you go exactly? In Slovakia? Yes. In the mountains? Yes, in Ždiar, a little village. Why? What are you doing there? Well I’m just living there, enjoying life.
It’s called the Ginger Monkey, it’s hard to explain, it’s a heart thing. It's only the best hostel in the world. Either I never told you anything about it or I told you too much. Anyway, it’s hard to really explain and impossible to make you understand by words, you see, it’s a heart thing. This year, I’ve realized how important it is, as a photographer, to photograph what has a meaning to you. Take pictures that are personal. This place, this Ginger Monkey, well, it’s kinda personal for me, it’s a heart thing, I told it already. I took pictures of it. You will probably still don't understand but it does not really matter. If you go there one day, you will understand but if you don’t, you won’t really understand but you see, it does not really matter to me. It’s personal. It’s a heart thing. From the abstract to the real, from the still to the moving, memories that will stay. A quick glimpse of a place, of memories. Nostalgia is just a way to remind you of how much of a good time you had. This good time is not gone, it’s still there, but you are the one who’s not there anymore, you’re here now. Photography is a way of showing what is still there when you’re not. I took too many pictures but it’s OK, I have too many memories and anyway, they are my pictures, my memories, my way to express it. It’s a heart thing.
If you're thinking of going there and make your own memories in this amazing, place, stop thinking and click here. You should, you will understand.
